With the creation of the community garden, we aim to:
Educational
·Create a tangible project to teach students the relevance of certain knowledge or skills as established by the Indiana Department of Education’s (IDOE) educational standards, which we follow as a minimum guideline for each grade level.
·Appeal to students who learn better through “doing”.
·Increase students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
· Create a tool to support health and nutrition education.
Places & Information
· Increase students’ knowledge of food production.
· Further students’ awareness of food insecurity both locally and globally.
· Aid in developing the community’s awareness of sustainable gardening.
· Provide an aesthetically pleasing environment on campus to encourage a connection between student and nature.
· Create a beautiful outdoor classroom space that can be used for arts and sciences.
Community & Support
· Contribute something back to the community.
-We will donate the bulk of our food crop to the Food Bank of NWI.
· Increase school exposure within the region.
· Produce food locally and without environmentally harmful pesticides.
· Foster relationships with people and organizations within the community that are not currently a part of our school family.
Development of Self
· Encourage students to contribute to some of their own nutritional requirements.
· Encourage students’ self-reliability
